  • Who conducts the courses?

    Paulina von Gemeines Holz conceived and has been conducting the woodcarving courses since 2018. A graduate biologist, she is knowledgeable about plants. Since 2011, she has been intensively studying forests as part of a research project. In 2015, she added woodcarving to her repertoire, creating a unique combination of species knowledge and woodcarving skills.

  • Where do the courses take place?

    Groups of up to 9 people can attend classes in my studio at Sedanstrasse 16, 70190 Stuttgart. Classes at other locations are possible by arrangement.

  • Who can participate in the courses?

    All courses are suitable for beginners and advanced woodcarvers aged 16 and over. With supervision and prior experience, participation is also possible from the age of 11. Please refer to the individual course description for any further details.

  • How much is the course fee?

    All prices are listed in the shop with the respective courses. For special events (bachelor/bachelorette parties, weddings, birthdays, etc.), please discuss conditions via email or telephone.

To book a course

  • Have you always wanted to work with wood? Is just making decorations too boring? You need something practical! Here you'll learn how to transform a piece of wood into a spoon. In this course, you'll learn the basics of wood carving using a spoon as an example. We'll work with hatchets, drawknives, gouges, paring knives, and carving knives. Of course, you can take your own handcrafted spoon home with you at the end. With proper care, it will last a lifetime. After the course, you'll be able to answer the following questions:
  • Which wood is suitable for spoon carving?
  • What tools are available? Which ones do I really need as a beginner?
  • How do I carve safely?
  • How do I make my spoon waterproof?
  • Is wood your material of choice and are you looking to get started with woodcarving? Have you already taken one of my other courses and want to deepen or refresh your carving skills? Do you know a woodworking enthusiast and would like to give them this course as a wonderful gift? Do you simply need new carving ideas?   • In these courses, you'll learn the fundamentals of woodturning. Whether you have a specific project in mind, want to discover woodturning as a new hobby, or have been considering it for a while and are looking for a way to get started, these courses are for you. Course content:

  • Construction and functions of the lathe
  • Handling different woodturning tools
  • Surface finishing of the finished workpiece End grain turning: Introduction to woodturning End grain turning: Small bowls End grain turning: Pepper mill
  • This is one of my most diverse courses. What you actually carve depends on the participants. You bring your own idea, and I'll teach you how to bring it to life. You'll learn how to use a carving knife and, if needed, a band saw. Carving, sawing, filing, and sanding will bring you closer to your own hand-carved figure. Course content:
  • Which woods are suitable for wooden figures?
  • Using a carving knife and other tools
  • What surface treatments are possible?
  • A handmade knife – you've always wanted to make one. In this course, you'll carve or turn your own wooden handle for YOUR knife. I always have a small selection of various blade blanks on hand. You can also bring your own blade. I'm happy to advise you on sourcing materials before the course. A wide variety of local woods is also available. After the course, you'll be able to answer the following questions:
  • Which types of wood are suitable for knife handles? Where can I get them?
  • How do I shape the perfect handle for myself?
  • What types of blade blanks are available and how do I obtain them?
  • How do I attach the blade?
  • How do I protect my knife from water? In the second part of the course, we'll cover the basics of sharpening.
  • Have you always wanted to work with wood? Is just making decorations too boring? You need something practical! In this course, you'll carve and turn everything from spoons and knives to magic wands. You're also welcome to bring your own project. This course will teach you the fundamentals of wood carving and turning. Over three days, you can work on different projects and refine your techniques. Course content:
  • Where can I find carving wood? Which wood is suitable for which carving projects?
  • Various carving and turning techniques
  • What tools are available? Which ones do I really need as a beginner? How do I sharpen my tools?
  • How do I make my carvings waterproof?
  • Current course dates
